Will The Courts Stop Parliament Being Suspended?

14/07/2019

Sir John Major, the former Prime Minister, has stated he would call for a judicial review should Boris Johnson become Prime Minister and try to suspend parliament in order t force through a no-deal Brexit.

Following on from Sir John Major's announcement that he would seek a judicial review in the courts if the new prime minister tried to suspend parliament, Anti-Brexit campaigner Gina Miller says she will take the government to court if they attempt to force a no-deal Brexit though an abuse of power by proroguing.

Gina Miller, who has already won a legal battle against ministers in respect of Article 50, has indicated she will take the government to court if they try and suspend parliament.

The electorate were lied to during the referendum campaign and no-one was suggesting that a no-deal Brexit was a realistic possibility. Instead, Brexiteers were boasting about how important the UK was to, as an example, the German car industry, and how Audi, BMW and Mercedes would apply pressure to Angela Merkel and ensure that a deal was struck.

Of course, the economists, business leaders and other 'qualified' commentators denounced this as nationalistic nonsense. But that didn't stop the message about a guaranteed favourable deal being repeated time and time again.

So, the idea of parliament being suspended to allow BoJo to force through a disastrous no-deal Brexit is completely unacceptable. Vote Leave and LeaveEU betrayed democracy through the lies, misinformation and illegal funding. Brexiteers have demonstrated a warped understanding of democracy, by suggesting that a people's vote on the deal presented to the EU would be undemocratic. If parliament were to be suspended in this manner, democracy in the UK will really have to be considered crushed to death.
