A UKIP candidate who said he "wouldn't even rape" a female Labour MP has refused to apologise.
Carl Benjamin wants to stand to become an MEP for the South West for UKIP in the European elections on May 23. This is a 'man' who, in response to a female Labour politician's statement that she had received rape threats, responded by saying "I wouldn't even rape you" in a YouTube video and then repeated this on Twitter.
Benjamin has declined to apologise for the comment, most recently at a press conference attended by UKIP leader Gerard Batten. When questioned, Batten also refused to criticise Benjamin for his tweet or his refusal to retract the comment.
Is this really the sort of person people want representing them in any political forum?
This deliberately offensive and abusive YouTuber does not deserve to be in any position of trust or influence. He doesn't deserve to be the subject of one of my blog posts either, but I think it is important to speak out and highlight the fact that this is the type of candidate being put forward by the xenophobic party of hate that UKIP has always been.
If, as I hope, we do end up voting in EU elections on 23 May 2019, I hope that the UKIP vote will be decimated, that they will fail to win any seats and we can have a meaningful discussion about what has gone wrong in society. We can begin to address the hatred that has been allowed to take control of politics, point out the lies that have been used to spread mistrust and build a more tolerant and inclusive nation.
