In 2016, Theresa May offered Donald Trump a State Visit to the UK following his election victory in America. No date was set, but today's news included confirmation that Trump has accepted an invitation from the Queen for a State Visit, which will be from 3rd to 5th June this year.
The State Visit is coming a year after Trump's 'working visit' to the UK in July 2018, which saw significant protests in the UK by thousands who objected to his presence.
Trump avoided coming face to face with the protestors, traveling everywhere by helicopter.
This time round, Trump is unlikely to be able to avoid the protestors, as a State Visit would be expected to include a formal dinner at Buckingham Palace, with a processional drive up The Mall. The opportunity for crowds to show their disgust at the honour being given to the orange faced buffoon is one that people won't wish to let pass without mass demonstrations.
Asad Rehman, the executive director of War on Want and a member of the Stop Trump Coalition, said the group was preparing for a huge mobilisation. “It will be very visual, it will be very creative, it will be a carnival atmosphere. People will be making sure that Donald Trump doesn’t have the photo opportunity that he wants.”
Emily Thornberry, the shadow foreign secretary, said; “This is a president who has systematically assaulted all the shared values that unite our two countries, and unless Theresa May is finally going to stand up to him and object to that behaviour, she has no business wasting taxpayers’ money on all the pomp, ceremony and policing costs that will come with this visit.”
There is no doubt in my mind that Trump is not a president that deserves a State Visit. Whilst it may be embarrassing for the UK, I do hope that peaceful protests stretch along the routes he travels by road. I want him to have no doubt that the majority of Britons view him as a deluded, dishonest, xenophobic, narcissistic. He is a man of immense stupidity, who constantly shouts and shows just how incredibly bereft of intelligence and humility he is.
