Reports suggest that the UK was Asia Bibi's preferred choice of destination in her plans to flee Pakistan following her release from eight years in prison, on death row for alleged blasphemy - a charge she denied.
Having been released from prison, she is in hiding in Pakistan in fear of her life.
It has been suggested the British government is avoiding an offer of asylum in the fear it would prompt 'unrest' in the UK and attacks on embassies, according to her supporters.
To treat a genuine asylum seeker in this manner is something that is quite shameful. In the words of a friend, Ivor, who is frequently at odds with my own views: "Personally, I think the UK should follow France as a secular nation but, if we can't to that, then to let a Christian heritage be hijacked because of sensitivities to another religion, simply beggars belief."
The whole point of the asylum system is to offer safe harbour to those who fear for their lives or freedoms and to restore a sense of security to their lives. We are better than this.
