Ivan Girga had collected 25 points on his licence for various driving sanctions, but due to a number of administrative and communication errors had not actually been banned from driving. Having not learned his lesson from his multiple motoring convictions, he caused a crash with a Vauxhall Zafira which saw the death of one and injuries to the rest of the passengers.
Girga has been jailed for nine years and banned from driving for one year.
Is this really a suitable punishment for someone who has shown such consistent disregard for the laws of the road and for the lives of other road users?
The 27-year-old criminal (he had 20 previous convictions for 36 other offences, including dishonesty and breaches of court orders) admitted causing death by dangerous driving, as well as five counts of causing serious injury.
Surely his prison sentence should have been longer. Furthermore, why should this individual ever be permitted to get behind the wheel of a car again? Surely his driving ban should be a lifetime one.
