Free Super-Fast Broadband For All: Electioneering Promises That Won't Work

15/11/2019

The Labour Party have said that, if elected to government on 12th December, the would provide super fast broadband to every home and business in the UK, free of charge, by 2030.

They have suggested that the way to do this is to part-nationalise British Telecom and use this as the medium to deliver broadband across the UK.

The thing is, British Telecom is not the sole provider of broadband in the country. It most certainly isn't the provider of the fastest broadband currently being enjoyed within the British Isles. So, whilst part-nationalising British Telecom and providing free broadband to all, what are their plans regarding the other providers?

This commitment is quite bonkers.

What is next?

Are they going to nationalise Cello Electronics and provide a free, British made, 4K television to every home in the country?

A government should not be seeking to take over the delivery of such services.

They should be seeking to push for the delivery of fast broadband to those homes and businesses that do not currently have the service. I would support the idea of providing support to telecoms businesses in delivering fast broadband to those areas, where is isn't commercially viable for those service companies to do so.

This is just another ridiculous 'free offer' from an ultra-left wing Labour Party; intended to buy votes from people who don't challenge the practicability of such election promises.

Before you cast your vote on 12th December, why not actually check to see which political party is most aligned to your personal views? There is a short quiz you can complete by following the link below; you might find the results interesting.

If you are one of the many millions who are I favour of remaining in the EU, you can check for recommendations as to who you should vote for. There are a couple of tools for this, one of them being:

Make your vote count.  Use whichever tools (above) that you believe will help you make an informed choice about what is important to you.  Much as I hope that will include the Stop Brexit tool, you should at least check which party best matches your own personal views and which candidates are sitting in your constituency.
