COVID-19 Conspiracists Are Still Spreading Their Lies And Really Need To Stop

01/10/2020

I really have been quiet on my blog recently, with other things distracting me.

However, this doesn't mean that I have been avoiding voicing my opinion completely. It's just that I haven't been doing so in a particularly structured, or even coherent manner.

I've responded to other people's social media posts, claiming that COVID doesn't exist; that it's a plot by the elites of the world to control us. They claim that those of us who listen to the scientists, medical professionals and politicians who warn about the threat of this virus are 'sheep'; that we're weak-minded and scared of finding out the truth.

Take a moment to think about that.

These followers of conspiracy theorists like David Icke, allege that those of us who haven't been taken in by the ridiculous protestations about such things as the coronavirus, are sheep.

If we look at the definition of 'sheep', and first set aside the wooly animal that gives us the meat that goes so well with mint sauce, we can see that the term is used to describe someone who is easily led, or is a follower of a god.

It is worth noting at his point that David Icke has actually claimed to be the 'son of the Godhead' and, when asked in a TV interview by Terry Wogan (dec) whether he was the son of god, responded by saying that 'Jesus would have been laughed at too.'

The conspiracy theorists seek to confuse others and, in particular, to 'recruit' people who are fearful and exploitable to join the ranks of the misinformed. They use discredited data, they share videos from YouTube that suit their narrative; videos that play on the fears of those easily led people.

This isn't simply about people sharing an alternative view on things. This is about dishonest, manipulative individuals who cause hate, mistrust and fear.

There are, in my opinion, three types of people who share conspiracy theories:

  • those who have serious delusional mental health issues, such as David Icke;

  • those who know that what they are sharing is wrong, but enjoy the power of influencing the gullible; and

  • the gullible and those caught by fear.

I just hope that those in the first two categories are identified and those in the third are protected.
