Carl Beech, who’s false allegations against a string of influential and famous public figures caused extreme upset and anguish to innocent people and their families, is now facing an 18-year sentence for his abhorrent behaviour.
The prison sentence includes:
15 years for 12 counts of perverting the course of justice, which are to be served concurrently;
18 months, to be served consecutively, for his fraudulent compensation claim in respect of the false accusations;
a further 18 months, also to be served consecutively, in relation to four counts of making indecent photographs of children, one count of possessing indecent images of children and one count of voyeurism. These related to a separate case in which he pleaded guilty earlier this year; and
two months, to be served concurrently, for breaching his bail conditions when he absconded to Sweden.
This quite clearly is a lengthy prison sentence and I am sure it is thoroughly deserved. But, and it's a big 'but', it is disturbing that his part in the abuse of children warranted so little punishment.
Whilst I wouldn't want to suggest that the 15 years for perverting the course of justice was excessive, I do think that the 18 months for his part in making and keeping indecent images of children seems really inadequate.
