A New Tennis Superstar?

01/07/2019

American tennis prodigy Cori "Coco" Gauff, aged just 15, became the youngest player in the Open era to advance through qualifying to reach Wimbledon's main draw.

Once there she was drawn to play fellow American Venus Williams, a five-time Wimbledon champion, in the first round. She then caused a stunning upset; defeating Venus, who won four Grand Slam titles, two of them at Wimbledon, before Gauff was born. She achieved this in straight sets!

Gauff, who had previously referred to Venus and her sister Serena as her idols, said, "It's the first time I have ever cried after winning a match".

It is great to see someone deliver an amazing sporting performance; for it to come from such a young woman, against one of the sports greatest champions, is simply amazing.

I really hope that this young player does not burn out too soon, but instead enjoys a long and successful career. She obviously deserves it.
